  1. AZT or retrovir, or zidovudine Trademark for
  2. azidothymidine, an antiviral drug used in the
  3. treatment of AIDS. Developed in the mid-1980s
  4. and approved for use by 1987, it is not a
  5. cure for AIDS, but is effective in 
  6. suppressing the causative virus (HIV) for as
  7. long as it is being administered.  Taken 
  8. every four hours, night and day, it reduces
  9. the risk of opportunistic infection and 
  10. relieves many neurological complications.
  11. However, frequent blood monitoring is 
  12. required to control anaemia, a potentially
  13. life-threatening side effect of AZT.  
  14. Blood transfusions are often necessary,
  15. and the drug must be withdrawn if bone-marrow
  16. function is severely affected.
